Apple: the Numbers Behind the (Huge) Numbers
Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) just came off its best quarter yet, in which its profit of $13.6 billion and revenues of $46 billion more than doubled its year-ago quarter, making it the second largest U.S. company by market cap. (See Apple Reports Q1 Revenue of $46B.)

Cisco Brings Smart Cities Within Reach
The concept of the smart city is one that holds a lot of promise and potential in terms of how computerized, networked public infrastructure might improve energy efficiency, resource management, and the overall quality of life in cities. Given the impact that computers and smart phones have had on our personal and professional lives, it seems that the application of computer technology to the infrastructure of cities has even greater potential to change the way we live. Despite this potential, and with only a few exceptions, smart city technologies have yet to be adopted in most places.

Amazon's latest TV commercial for the Kindle Fire again features a female model distracting viewers from the device -- for all the wrong reasons. Whether it's deliberate or not is anyone's guess. (Video below.)

Cisco Finally Drops ūmi
When Cisco
Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO)
started its restructuring last year, it wasn't hard to pick ūmi as likely cut.
Like the Flip camera, ūmi was part of Cisco's push to put video networking in
consumers' hands. But some of us contended from the start that this didn't have
to be Cisco's job. It's not as if video's success was a question, especially
with the iPhone having already become a big deal.
