The Catalan capital is becoming an international reference point among smart
cities, which use technology to make the urban environment better to live
in.
Fira de Barcelona is currently hosting the first edition of the SmartCity
Expo & World Congress.
The event meets more than 9,000 professionals and 300 companies are
discussing the interaction between new technologies, urban planning and citizen
welfare. The first edition of the congress started on November 29th
and will end tomorrow.
Representatives from more than 50 cities, international companies, research
centers, universities, and other professionals and experts are discussing about
energy, environment, urban planning, mobility, among other subjects.
They are also discussing how best to find the resources to finance smart
initiatives in the current climate. Some experts pointed cooperation between
public and private sector as th best route.
Xavier Trias, mayor of Barcelona, announced that the city will use this
formula to implement further smart city projects in all city districts, not only
in the heavily technological 22@ (new technology park in Barcelona).
On the other hand, last week Trias participated in the 10th
Metropolis World Congress held in Brazil, where he met with Cisco Systems Vice
President and agreed to build an innovation centre focused on smart cities in
Barcelona.
Trias said Barcelona wants to lead the transformation of European cities into
smart cities, and also he unveiled the creation of the Smart City Campus in the
22@ district, which would concentrate several companies in the sector, as
well as a school of engineering.
